Does getting an annual skin exam at the dermatologist increase my chances of detecting melanoma early?

I am 24, I am active, and I am healthy. I have no real significant family history of melanoma(my grandmother had one removed in her 60s, and it never came back). I saw the dermatologist about 6 months ago, and she said everything looked fine. I have a lot of moles (little less than 100. Mostly flat and pin head sized) so I’m a bit anxious about my skin since I have had my fair share of sun exposure(burnt some as a kid and a bit as an adult). I now try to cover up more than I used to. I have a handful of slightly atypical moles (not new) that constantly get on my nerves. I do self skin exams regularly. I guess my question is am I doing everything I can to promote early detection should a problem arise, and how do I keep myself from freaking out in the process?
